Substitute Teaching

Substitutes must:
- Hold a bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
- Obtain an Illinois Substitute License, valid for teaching PreK-12.
Or-
- Be actively enrolled in an approved educator preparation program through a regionally accredited institution in Illinois
- Have recently completed (within the last semester) at least 90 semester hours of coursework as a part of the approved Illinois educator preparation program
Or-
- Obtain a Short-Term Substitute teaching license
- Short-Term Substitute (STS) Teacher Training is required for individuals who want to pursue a Short-Term Substitute teaching license. Applicants for an STS teaching license must hold an Associate degree or have completed at least 60 credit hours from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.

Substitute Pay Rates: 2025-2026
- Substitute Teacher: $193.00/day
- Teacher Assistant: $153.00/day
- Long-Term Substitute Teacher: $342.59/day
- School Secretary: $23.00/hour
- Registered Nurse: $48.00/hour
