A Message from the Principal

    Welcome to Nelson Elementary School! Nelson is     a nurturing and engaging school community dedicated to the social, emotional, and academic growth of all students.  Inquisitive and caring students, dedicated teachers, supportive families, and collaborative community partners make Nelson an incredible place for children to learn and grow.  I encourage you to search our website to learn about the many ways we demonstrate our commitment to success without boundaries for each and every student here at Nelson.

    It is important to me that all members genuinely feel a part of our Nelson school community.  I hope that you will feel free to contact me with any concerns, ideas, or feedback about how our school functions. The more closely we work together the more successful our school will be.

    ¡Bienvenidos a la Escuela Primaria de Nelson!  Nelson es una comunidad escolar enriquecedora y atractiva dedicada al crecimiento social, emocional y académico de todos los estudiantes. Los estudiantes inquisitivos y comprensivos, los maestros dedicados, las familias que los apoyan y los socios de la comunidad de colaboración hacen de Nelson un lugar increíble para que los niños aprendan y crezcan. About Principal Leitao

  • Mrs. Leitao joined Nelson School as Principal in 2017, having previously served as Bilingual Program Director for Evanston/Skokie School District 65. She began her career at Chicago Public Schools, where she served as a bilingual classroom teacher and ESL resource teacher. Mrs. Leitao also held several positions at Community Consolidated School District 62 in Des Plaines, including 4th Grade Sheltered English Teacher, English Language Learner (ELL) Instructional Specialist, ESL Teacher, and Principal of the District’s Orchard Place Elementary School.

    Mrs. Leitao holds a B.A. in social relations with a minor in Latin American and Caribbean studies from Michigan State University and an M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from National Louis University.
