Here is a brief overview of policies, procedures, and general information I hope you will find informative.  Many of these will be discussed in greater detail at Open House and throughout the school year.  As always, don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
A is for Attendance.  Learning and fun take place everyday!  Please make sure your child comes to school each day prepared and on time except in cases of illness or emergency.  Student arrival time is 9:05.
Assignment Book - Your child's assignment book is an important link between home and school.  Please check it nightly.
B is for Birthdays.  If you wish to send a healthy treat for your child's birthday please make sure there is enough for all the students in our room.   Please send napkins or cups if needed.
Book Orders -About once a month a book order will come home from Scholastic.  This is a great way to purchase books inexpensively.  You will also be able to place your book order online.
C is for  Communication.  Communication between school and home is very important.  Feel free to contact me through email, phone, or in writing.

D is for Dismissal.   School ends at 3:40.  If your child is to go home a different way than his/her normal manner you must send a written note.
E is for Emergencies.  The school may need to contact you in case of an emergency.  If your phone number or address changes, please notify the office as soon as possible.
F is for Family The students and I spend a lot of time together and consider one another part of our "school family."  Please encourage your child to talk about their day at school.
G is for Graded Work.  Graded papers will be sent home on a regular basis in your child's Sign and Return folder.  Occasionally, papers will be sent home in your child's Take Home Folder.  Papers that require a signature need to be returned.
H is for Homework.  Your child will usually have some type of math homework each night.  Other assignments, such as word work  are introduced on Monday and due Friday.  A note will be sent home requiring a parent signature when homework is not turned in on time.  Students who are absent of course will have extra time to make up their work.  Students are expected to read nightly for 20 minutes and practice basic math facts.
I is for Information.  Important community, school, and class notices will be sent home periodically.  Please check your child's Take Home Folder in his/her binder. It is also important to check our school and class websites for parent and student information.
J is for Jumping to Conclusions.   Please do not jump to conclusions when your child tells you about something that happened in school.  Just call or send a note, so we can talk about your concerns and so you can get more information.
K is for Kindness.   We will learn about  being kind to others and ourselves every day.  Nelson School and room 104 have a zero tolerance policy against bullying.
L is for LunchOur class will eat lunch at 12:40.  If your child is buying hot lunch, please make sure they have money on their lunch card.
M is for Money.  When sending money to school, please put it in an envelope labeled with your child's name, room number, and it's purpose to ensure your money makes it to the right place. Put it in the clear plastic pouch in your child's M.O.V.I.E. Binder.
N is for November Conferences.  It's not too early to think about November Parent-Teacher Conferences on November .  You can sign up for a convenient time at our Open House.  FYI- Evening time slots fill up very fast.
O is for Open House.  Please plan to attend this event on  to learn more about our daily classroom activities, policies, and to see your child's classroom!
P is for PBISPositive Behavior Intervention Supports is a program that clearly teaches and reinforces behavioral expectations in a variety of school settings.  at Nelson, we expect our students to be Respectful, Responsible, and Safe.
PTO -The PTO is our school's Parent Teacher Organization.  If you have not done so already, please join this worthwhile organization.
Q is for Questions.  It is certainly worth repeating---don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have.  Remember... there are no silly questions!
R is for Reading.  Students are expected to read at home at least 20 minutes every night as part of their nightly homework.  They will record their minutes on a weekly reading log and occasionally complete written activities based on their nightly reading.  Check out the V.I.P. page on this website to see why nightly reading is so important!
S is for Snacks.  I encourage the children to bring healthy snacks to school.  Our snack time is 10:10.  Children are allowed to have a water bottle on their desk during the day.  I prefer the pop-up tops to prevent spills and distractions.  If there is a problem, the water bottle will be sent home.  Only healthy snacks and water are allowed-no juice or carbonated beverages, please.
T is for Tardies.  Students should be at school when the 9:05 bell rings.  Arriving after this time causes students to lose valuable instructional time and is disruptive to the class.
U is for Unique.  Each child is unique and has his/her own special gifts, talents, and learning styles.  Therefore, I will be providing instruction to your child that may be different then his or her peers.  If there is anything you feel I need to know in order to better assist your child, please contact me.
V is for VisitorsAccording to school policy, all visitors need to check in the office and obtain a visitor's badge whenever they are in our building during the day.
W is for Website.  Our class website is updated regularly.  Check it out!!
