Principal's Message

eagle.jpgOn behalf of the students and staff, I welcome you to V.H. Nelson School.  Nelson is located on the border between Niles and Morton Grove in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago.  Our roughly 620 students in grades K-6 bring an array of diverse cultures to our classrooms each day.  Roughly one-third of our students receive English Language support and approximately half of our students are low-income.  Nelson School provides a variety of services to meet the broad range of our students' talents and needs.

In the 2013-14 school year are two more interactive whiteboards for additional classrooms purchased by our PTO.  In addition to supporting us through technology purchases, Nelson's PTO also provides our kindergarten students with Spirit Day t-shirts and gives teachers money to purchase instructional and classroom supplies.  We are so fortunate to have an active and supportive PTO.  Please join us on the first Tuesday of each month in the Nelson Learning Center at 6:30 p.m..  The PTO not only provides fun activities and events for the Nelson community, but they also purchase many items that enrich our students' educational experiences.

Nelson School prides itself on meeting the individual academic, social/emotional and physical needs of each and every student. Our dedicated and professional staff participate in hundreds of hours of continuing professional development to keep up with current best practice. This year a School Leadership Team consisting of teachers, aides and administrators will determine our instructional priorities.  Our staff members participate in book studies, cohorts within the school and district as well as attend outside workshops and seminars.

New this year will be incorporating the Common Core State Standards into our lesson planning as well as using new benchmark tests to ensure that our students continue to make expected progress.  Exploring new ways to create and enhance parent partnerships is also a goal for this year.  Stay tuned!

Sincerely,

Dr. Jean LeBlanc
