Students that speak a language other than English or Spanish will receive ESL – (English language support services) from ESL certified teachers.  They will either have an ESL teacher pull them out of their classroom for ESL services or the ESL teacher will go into their classroom to work with the students that qualify for ESL support.  ESL teachers and staff will provide students with English language instruction they need to be successful in the general education classroom.

Students that speak Spanish in fourth through eighth grades will receive ESL services by an ESL teacher through out the school day.  These students may be pulled out of their classroom or the ESL teacher may go into their general education classroom to provide support to the student.

Sheltered and ESL Supported Classrooms

Students that qualify for ESL services may be placed into a Sheltered or an ESL Supported classroom.  Sheltered and ESL Supported classrooms have ESL certified teachers that work with the entire class to support English language development. Sheltered and ESL Supported classrooms do not move at a slower pace than the General Education classrooms do. These classes are specifically designed to improve English language proficiency throughout the day while students are learning the grade level material/subjects. Sheltered Classrooms are made up of ESL students at varying levels of English language proficiency. ESL Supported classrooms have 60% ESL students and 40% General Education students. Students are randomly selected to be ESL Supported classrooms.

Please note, not all schools offer Sheltered or ESL Supported classrooms. If you would like to know more about either one of these classroom styles and if they are offered at your child’s school, please contact building principal or an ESL teacher at the school.

 General Education Classrooms

Students that do not qualify for the Spanish Bilingual Program or for ESL support services will be placed in the general education program.  These students will not receive any type of ESL or Bilingual instruction or services.
