Asbestos (AHERA) Notification
During abatement, all known friable asbestos has been removed from all District 63 schools. Remaining non-friable asbestos containing floor tiles in certain areas of each school are maintained and monitored according to State and Federal requirements. The School District will maintain these floors until periodic building improvements are undertaken at each school.
During the summer of 2000, 2001, 2002, the school district completed asbestos abatement and replaced varying amounts of flooring and insulation at Apollo, Melzer, Stevenson, Mark Twain, Washington Elementary Schools and Gemini Junior High School. Over the course of completed life/safety projects, various amounts of asbestos flooring, mastic and exterior soffit panels were removed from Apollo, Stevenson, Melzer and Gemini schools. All abatement work was performed in compliance with all regulations during summer break or periods when students and staff were not in attendance. Testing was completed at each school after completion of the work, prior to the opening of each school.
Please address any questions or concerns relating to the District Asbestos program to the Director of Operations, LEA Designated Person, Educational Service Center, 10150 Dee Road, Des Plaines, Illinois 60016.
